What is Hypnobirthing?
Marie Mongan – Hypnobirthing Institute Founder developed the most comprehensive birthing education program available, Mongan Method HypnoBirthing® offers women and their partners opportunities to explore their choices and develop the decisions-making skill necessary to achieve their birthing goals.
What to Expect
HypnoBirthing® the Mongan Method will teach you the art of using your own natural birthing instincts. We will explore the history of obstetrics to understand why fear and pain are associated with birth. You will learn how to trust your body and work with it, as well as how to be free of harmful emotions that lead to the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome. You will learn to call upon your body’s own natural relaxant and thus lessen or eliminate discomfort and the need for medication. You will be fascinated as you view HypnoBirthing® videos showing laboring mothers, awake, alert, and relaxed as they experience the kind of gentle birth that you, too, can know. You will learn HypnoBirthing® techniques such as breathing, relaxation, visualization, and deepening. In addition, you will learn how to create affirmations that will positively accompany you through your birth. These techniques are the basis of this course and will become a regular practice for you.
We will talk about practical tips for choosing your birth setting and caregiver, nutrition, exercise, perineal massage, positions during labor, and how to communicate well with your birth team.
You will leave feeling connected with your body and baby, knowledgeable about the birth process, and empowered to have the birth experience you choose.
The History? How HypnoBirthing® Originated
Pioneer Dr. Grantly Dick-Read: The philosophy of HypnoBirthing® was based on the work of the British obstetrician, Grantly Dick-Read. He questioned the way obstetrics were being practiced and believed that “healthy childbirth was never intended by the natural law to be painful”. Read developed the theory about “fear-tension-pain syndrome”, which states that pain results from fear and tension. Through his observations in hospitals and tribal societies, he discovered when women are relaxed and free of fear, birth is safer and possibly even painless.
Developer Marie F. Mongan: In 1989, HypnoBirthing was first introduced by Marie F. Mongan. This philosophy is returning to the idea that every woman instinctually knows how to give birth to her children in a pleasant and joyful way. After Marie experienced her first 2 births the way most women did in the 1950’s (strapped down to the bed, anesthetized, alone, and baby pulled out with forceps), she was determined to have a natural birth. The births of her last 2 babies were spectacular, undisturbed and in self-hypnosis with her husband in the room. When it was time for her daughter, Maura, to give birth, Marie created this book, and the method of HypnoBirthing® was born. Since then, HypnoBirthing® has become an international movement to give birth to children safely and without medication. HypnoBirthing® empowers women to awaken their natural birth instincts, release their fears, and breathe their babies into the world.
